Saturday Finds

Over the past two Saturdays, my sister and I have gone exploring some estate sales around Seattle. Here are a few of the treasures we picked up.

The first thing I got was this vintage picture for $7. When I first saw this, I thought it was cute but put in back because I didn't know where I would hang it. Only I kept thinking about how sweet it was and just couldn't leave it behind.

I also got these three scarves. Scarves are such an easy way to add a pop of color to any outfit. For $2 each, you can never have too many!

At one sale, there was three boxes full of LIFE magazines from the 1960's and 1970's. We ended up picking out 5 and because it was the last day of the sale, everything was 50% off. Making each magazine $2.50. The two I kept, aren't worth any money but have some great fashion photos. Plus my sister and I had fun laughing at how bad the food looks in all the ads.

The next thing I wanted to share is something my sister got, which are these Donna Reed paper dolls.
Both me and my sister adored these dolls when we spotted them but I just couldn't think of a good reason to pay $3. My sister (who went to art school) thought they were just too cool not to get them and I know she'll think of something great to do with them. We also had fun going through the clothes and deciding which dresses fit which doll.

Estate sales can be a really fun weekend adventure plus these types of sales are a great way to find some really unique items that you would have never known you wanted/needed.

Green Jeans Go To Dinner: Colored Jeans Part Deux

RSVP? Nope, not me! Therefore, I'm a little late to the party on jumping in on the colored jeans trend. I fought the urge for so long and finally couldn't stand it anymore (especially after seeing Sara's last post!). Today, I went to go purchase my very own pair of colored jeans. I popped in for a red pair....and popped out with a pair of green. C'est La Vie!

Tonight, my friend and I went to dinner in downtown historic Snohomish. We had great wine, listened to live music, and oh yeah, vented it up some more. Sheesh! Hope I'm done venting for awhile. Luckily, I have patient friends. Let me see...yep, that's about it. Just a mellow evening between friends.

I took my new green jeans out for a spin on the town. I paired them with.............wait for it.......... *shock-a-roo* a thrifted animal print blouse and thrifted scarf. To spice things up a bit, I had an aqua necklace hidden under my scarf that I revealed later at dinner (<---why yes, I AM a wild and crazy girl!). Here is how it all came together...

I'm trying really hard to smize in this one. Can you tell? Dear Diary, when is my blog "modeling" going to improve?

Thrifted: Animal Print Blouse (Georgiou Studio), Scarf (Amanda Smith)
Misc: Green Jeans, Necklace, Earrings (F21), Motorcycle Jacket (Mossimo), Envelope Clutch (TJ Maxx), Pointed Toe Pumps (, they are on heavy rotation lately), ring (gifted)
Lips and Nails: Bare Escentuals, Buxom Lips, Destiny, Sally Hansen, Insta-Dri, #310 Slick Slate (I initially was going to paint them green too, but thought that it would be too matchy-matchy. Also, I was going for a tougher vibe with the motorcycle jacket, so I painted my nails Slate. And nothing screams tough like a night out in Snohomish, Washington AKA the antique capital of Washington. hee hee)

What trend did you break down and try?

Is it Color or Colour?

Week 2 of my style challenge is color blocking! If you remember this post where I declared my love for colored jeans. Well, I have to say that the two of us are getting along with flying colors (ha, ha get it?) Anyways...
The trend of color blocking is so fun and bright, I just had to give it a try.  As a proud owner of color jeans, it would have been wrong not to, right?
I'm tickled pink with how this outfit turned out. It's so simple and pulled together. I didn't get blue in the face over trying to get dress and I really think this is going to be one of my go-to outfits for those days when nothing else seems to work.
Ok, I think that enough bad color jokes for one post (I'm a little sad to say that I did Google color jokes just in case I missed a good one. Thankfully, I didn't.) -S
Pants: Forever 21, Shirt: Thrifted, Shoes: Ross, Ring: Forever 21, Necklace: Flea Market, Lipstick: UO Lips "Charmer"

"You want to WHAT?"

That's exactly what I asked when my niece called to invite me to go to a few stores and then to of all places....Goodwill. You see, my mom and I go gaga for a thrift store. My niece, however, did not inherit a thrifting gene. Not even close! So when I got that call, I threw on the first thing I could find and got over to their house before she changed her mind. Nothing earth shattering, but this is what I slapped together (oh, and apparently my hair was not one of those things!)....

I still love gold aviators ----->

(I guess there are worse things to still love!)

Thrifted: Cardigan (Style N Co.), Braided Metallic Belt, Brown Handbag (Misako), Jeans (DKNY)
Misc: V Neck Tee (Chico's..kinda "mature" but needed it for pieces that travel well!), Leopard Print Earrings and Bracelet (F21)
OFMC (old from my closet...origin unknown): Sunnies, Brown Wedge Shoes
Lips and Nails: Bare Escentuals Buxom Lips in Destiny, Sinful Colors Cuty #289

Oh, and I broke one of my cardinal rules while at Goodwill. I snagged a shirt without trying it on. I'll be bringing it back. Such a thrifting sin!

Thrifted Lemon and Snow Leopard

Ever need a night to get together with the girls to vent, laugh, and hopefully not cry?

This weekend, I sure did! It felt great to get together and have a couple of cocktails, giggle, and get advice. This outfit is what I wore to dinner with my friends. This bright, 3/4 sleeve, lemony blazer was acquired the same day that I got this blouse. I am a huge fan of animal print (I'm sure you have been able to pick up on that by now, right?) and thought the lemon would look great with this thrifted snow leopard blouse. Even though I like to rock fun, bright colors, I thought I would keep my handbag more neutral. I paired my look with this thrifted grey leather bag. While I was waiting for my friends, I popped into Forever 21 and found these perfect yellow feather earrings (while attempting to dodge the harsh, bright lights in the store!). A great night was had by all. Even the waitress mentioned that she liked all of our bright colors. Um, extra tip for her! Thanks, girlfriends!

Thrifted: Blazer (Donna Toran), Snow Leopard Print Blouse (rawr!), Grey Leather Handbag
Misc: Black Trousers (Nine West), Earrings,Ring, Bracelet (F21), Necklace (OFMC=old from my closet), Pointed Toe Pumps (Payless)
Lips and Nails: Wet N Wild, #521A, Sinful Colors-Cuty, #289

Enjoy the rest of your weekend! Oh, and sorry for the dark pictures...still working on those photography skills! Oye!

Mexicali Magic

Just a simple recipe for today. I'm always on the look out for quick, Gluten free meals. And if the meal also provides me with leftovers....Bonus! My little niece RAVED about this recipe. To be honest, I wasn't that excited when I went over to my sister's house to have this for family dinner night. But, it is one of my sweet niece's favorites, so I thought I would give it a shot. And can I just say.....AAayyee Carumba! It was delish!

Mexicali Chicken:

1 Cup of Cheese (Mexican Mix)
3 Chicken Breasts
1 Bunch of Green Onions
1 Can Chili (with or without Beans)
1  3oz. Can Olives
1  7oz. Jar Salsa Verde
1  3oz. Cream Cheese

Cook chicken and then shred into a casserole dish. Mix all other ingredients. Top with cheese. Cook 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until casserole bubbles.

 ¡Buen provecho!

PS This is not my mother's Betty Crocker recipe, I just loved the old recipe card photo.  :)

Sunday Best

I have been thinking about challenging myself and my style. Each week for at least one outfit, I am daring myself to style my look around a trend or clothing item. This week's outfit topic is mixing prints. At first, the idea of mixing prints seems strange but I'm always up for more ways to expand my wardrobe.

Last summer when my grandma was moving and giving stuff away, she set aside a pantsuit for me. It wasn't until I got home that I realized that it wasn't just any pantsuit but a three piece plaid polyester pantsuit. And when worn all at once looks like really fancy pajamas. But take the skirt and put it with a simple striped button up, you can almost forget about the matching jacket and pants...maybe?

Button Up: Target, Skirt: Part of a 3 piece pantsuit from my grandma, Heels: Nordstrom Rack, Belt: Thrifted
It ended up being the perfect little outfit for Sunday dinner with the family for my mom's birthday. A lovely dinner that ended with yummy key lime pie. All in all not a bad way to start the week!

Enjoy the rest of your week! -S

Warning: Total Self-Indulgent Post

Just like clockwork, I know that it must be Spring. I am starting to get that all too familiar, once-yearly itch. That's right,'s Bang Envy (don't worry, no ointment needed)! I know that there are way more pressing issues in the world then forehead fringe, but these photos of some of my all time favorite bangs have me reaching for my shears.....

This is me with some kinda sorta side bangy things..

Maybe I'll just go back to my "kinda sorta side bangy" things.  They are much easier to grow out if I hate them. How often       do you change your hair?

Weekend Update

I have to admit, this is not going to be the most exciting weekend update report in the history of weekend update reports. You see, I just have Saturday off this weekend from the externship. That means that I've been running around like a mad woman trying to get all my errands done in one day. I've been a domestic diva today cleaning house, doing laundry, grocery shopping, buying a stop watch so that I can be a better intern, washing the car, and spreading mulch in my flower beds. I got a good work out in lugging these things around...sure hope I'll be able to lug people around tomorrow!

My morning started off with a trip to the vet. About two years ago, I adopted one of my dogs, Rue, from a rescue organization. Her owner had to go to an assisted living facility and give her up. I am a complete sucker for animals and old ladies, and that snippet was all I had to read and the next thing I knew, Rue was mine. Here is sweet Rue on a good day......

AND  here is what Rue turns into at the vet. The canine version of Hannibal Lecter!                                 It actually takes two people to wrestle all squirmy, nipping 11 pounds of her.

Her vet was nice enough to skip the rectal temperature check today. Phew!

I hope your weekend has started off better than Rue's!

PS  Even bigger weekend update news, I finally got a tripod! I will be able to take way more thrifted outfit pictures than having to wait for someone to take pity on me and agree to be my Nigel Barker.<--I wish!!

What Would Effie Wear?

Ok, I have to admit that I am harboring a mild fascination with the styling and costuming of Elizabeth Bank's character, Effie Trinket, in, "The Hunger Games". Phew...I feel much better now that I could get that out in the open. Even though I am not a citizen of the Capitol and her look is way more than I could pull off in my every day life, there are aspects of Effie's outfits that I love. Particularly the bold colors, lady like silhouettes, and pompous detailing.

AND I am not the only one sharing in on this girl crush! There are Effie make-up and manicure tutorials and even a nail polish line.

Call me crazy, but Effie reminds me of a modernized version of a girl from a different Capital.....

What girl crush looks inspire you?
